What is the idea behind the name “Survive and Thrive”?

We want young adults to not only survive their cancer diagnosis but to thrive during treatment/recovery and the rest of their lives. We believe this is possible while recognizing that it can be a very difficult and slow process.

What kinds of adventure activities and trips do you organize?

Every year we run at least one kayaking expedition down the Owyhee River in SE Oregon and one week long sailing trip in the Discovery Islands/Desolation Sound, BC. We have special partnerships set up with local guiding companies that facilitate the technical aspect of the various expeditions but do all the programming and facilitation ourselves. We are always looking to expand our program offerings and have a couple of amazing expeditions in the works!!

What is the criteria to come on an expedition?

It all depends on the expedition, the level of physical difficultly and where you are in you cancer journey. For example for the kayaking expedition it is important that you have a minimum level of fitness and have attended some sort of program where you share with other YA’s about you cancer experience. The sailing expedition has less criteria as it is less physically demanding. The appropriateness of an expedition for a survivor will be determined on a case by case basis in collaboration with the participant and their doctor. Space on most expeditions is very limited so there is other criteria, like previous advocacy and fundraising involvement, that might also be taken into account.

Why does it cost money to come on an expedition?

Participants will be required to contribute/fundraise their own expedition fees and travel expenses in order to come on an expedition. We really believe this creates ownership and demonstrates intent to really get the most out of the program. It is too risky to give out 100% free rides on expeditions like these because if participants are not fully invested there can be negative consequences to the group and to the individual. However, we will work with each survivor individually to help with fundraising and have a very limited amount of stipend money available for those who demonstrate need.

How far in advance do I have to sign up and what is the process?

The summer expeditions can fill up very quickly when registration is opened in November. To sign up you must first fill out a “Get to Know You” application form and/or have a quick phone interview with the program coordinator (Mike), send in your medical form and put down the deposit to save your spot. Once this is done you can go ahead and book your flights!
